Il est communément porté au crédit de saint Thomas d’Aquin d’avoir renouvelé et enrichi la compréhension de la personne grâce à la notion jusqu’alors inédite de « relation subsistante ». Le présent article se propose de replacer cette découverte dans sa perspective propre, celle d’un théologien chrétien qui, sans prétendre épuiser conceptuellement un mystère reçu dans la foi, s’efforce néanmoins de rendre raison de la distinction réelle des personnes divines au sein de l’indivise Trinité. On examine d’abord comment saint Thomas (...) a su reprendre, éclairer et nouer par intégrations successives chacun des éléments de la célèbre définition de la personne léguée par Boèce. On est alors en mesure de suivre pas à pas la démarche d’analogie, aussi rigoureuse qu’audacieuse, qui permit à l’Aquinate de discerner, dans cette ratio commune et si humaine de la personne, l’éclat incomparable d’un nom divin. Mais, si l’on désire approcher de plus près le distinctif propre de la personne en Dieu, il n’est d’autre voie que de pénétrer dans la révélation trinitaire qui oblige et qui seule autorise à transcender la frontière du relatif et de l’absolu pour penser enfin, avec Thomas, la « relation comme subsistante », prérogative unique et bienheureux secret de la tripersonnalité divine.Thomas Aquinas is often given credit for having renewed and enriched the concept of personhood, thanks to the previously unheard of notion of « subsisting relation ». This paper proposes to place this discovery in its proper perspective, that of a Christian theologian who, without pretending to exhaust conceptually a mystery received in faith, endeavors nevertheless to provide an account of the real distinction between the divine persons of the undivided Trinity. We begin with an examination of how St. Thomas was able to take up, clarify and shape by successive integrations the famous definition of personhood left by Boethius. This places us in a position to follow step by step the analogical approach, as rigorous as it is audacious, that allows Aquinas to discern, in this common and so human ratio of « person », the incomparable radiance of a divine name. Yet if one desires to draw nearer to the distinctiveness of personhood in God, there is no other way than to penetrate divine revelation, which requires and which alone authorizes transcending the frontier between the relative and the absolute, to think finally, with Thomas, about « relation as subsistent », a unique prerogative and happy secret of the divine tri-personality. Thomas d’Aquin situe l’obéissance parmi les vertus annexes de la justice, comme étant contenue sous chacune des vertus dites de déférence (religion, piété filiale, respect), mais il en dégage aussi la spécificité : vertu des êtres doués de volonté et d’intelligence, donc de liberté, elle se distingue de toute soumission de contrainte, et c’est par un choix intelligent et libre que l’être obéissant est amené à renoncer à sa volonté propre. Toutefois, ce n’est pas ce renoncement qui fournit à Thomas (...) le critère pour reconnaître l’obéissance authentique. Son seul critère de discernement est l’objet spécifique sur lequel porte l’obéissance, à savoir le précepte, émané d’une autorité légitime et que l’on vise à accomplir. Cette notion du précepte délimite strictement le domaine sur lequel une autorité exerce sa supériorité et, par là, protège l’obéissance du subordonné par un « droit » contre toute extension abusive de ce domaine de supériorité. Saint Thomas livre ainsi de précieux repères pour une juste conception et pratique de l’obéissance aussi bien qu’un rempart contre ses défigurations possibles. Il offre même une pensée de la résistance, qui n’est pas désobéissance mais jugement pratique orienté par les exigences de la charité, fin ultime de toute obéissance. La lecture ici proposée de la question 104 de la Secunda Secundae de la Somme de théologie, consacrée à la vertu d’obéissance, s’enrichit, en amont, des prolongements décisifs que Thomas en a donnés dans son traité de la vie religieuse, mais elle est aussi éclairée, en aval, par les fermes déterminations sur l’obéissance politique qu’il avait énoncées dans son traité des lois. Une lettre de Montesquieu (1689-1755) à d'Alembert du 16 septembre 1753 refuse la proposition d'écrire pour l'Encyclopédie les articles "Démocratie" et "Despotisme" et propose une contribution sur le "Goût. L'Essai sur le goût dans les choses de la nature et de l'art de Montesquieu forme une partie de l'article "Goût", paru dans le tome VII de l'Encyclopédie en 1757 de façon posthume et à l'état inachevé. Cet article est lui-même composé d'un article dû à Voltaire, puis du "fragment sur le (...) goût" de Montesquieu, comme l'appellent Diderot et d'Alembert. In 1245 Canon Law reaches an apex. A Lawyer-Pope Innocent IV proclaims at the Œcumenical Council of Lyons the prestige of Canon Law and his professors. Montesquieu cercò di dimostrare come, sotto la diversità degli eventi, la storia abbia un ordine e manifesti l'azione di leggi costanti. Ogni ente ha le proprie leggi. Le istituzioni e le leggi dei vari popoli non costituiscono qualcosa di casuale e arbitrario, ma sono strettamente condizionate dalla natura dei popoli stessi, dai loro costumi, dalla loro religione e sicuramente anche dal clima. Al pari di ogni essere vivente anche gli uomini, e quindi le società, sono sottoposte a regole fondamentali che (...) scaturiscono dall'intreccio stesso delle cose. Queste regole non debbono considerarsi assolute, cioè indipendenti dallo spazio e dal tempo; esse al contrario, variano col mutare delle situazioni; come i vari tipi di governo e delle diverse specie di società. Ma, posta una società di un determinato tipo, sono dati i principi che non può derogare, pena la sua rovina. Ma quali sono i tipi fondamentali in cui si può organizzare il governo degli uomini? Montesquieu ritiene che i tipi di governo degli uomini siano essenzialmente tre: la repubblica, la monarchia e il dispotismo. Ciascuno di questi tre tipi ha propri princìpi e proprie regole da non confondersi tra loro. Il principio che è alla base della repubblica è, secondo Montesquieu, la virtù, cioè l'amor di patria e dell'uguaglianza; il principio della monarchia è l'onore ossia l'ambizione personale; il principio del dispotismo, la paura che infonde nei cuori dei sudditi. La repubblica è la forma di governo in cui il popolo è al tempo stesso monarca e suddito; il popolo fa le leggi e elegge i magistrati, detenendo sia la sovranità legislativa sia quella esecutiva. The Writings of Charles De Koninck, Volume 1, introduces a projected three-volume series that presents the first English edition of the collected works of the Catholic Thomist philosopher Charles De Koninck. Ralph McInerny is the project editor and has prepared the excellent translations. The first volume contains writings ranging from De Koninck's 1934 dissertation at the University of Louvain on the philosophy of Sir Arthur Eddington, to two remarkable early essays on indeterminism and the unpublished book "The Cosmos."
